The story behind a celebration inspired by Provence
and rooted in the heart of Olalla.
Where It All Started
In early 2023, local winery owner Mary Ellen invited me to help brainstorm ideas for a new event that would attract more visitors to her winery. The goal was simple: create another reason for people to visit the Olalla Winery & Vineyard during the summer season.
We explored several possibilities, including, believe it or not, a hat contest! Somewhere during that creative process, the conversation turned to lavender.
As we continued talking, I realized the opportunity reached far beyond a single winery event.
A Vision Begins to Take Shape
Having grown up in Provence, where lavender is woven into the landscape, the culture, and the rhythm of summer, I had experienced firsthand how lavender festivals bring entire villages to life.
What if, instead of creating an event for one business, I created something that celebrated the whole community? What if lavender became the thread connecting Olalla's farms, businesses, artisans, musicians, Gathering Places, and welcoming spirit?
That was the moment the vision for the Olalla Lavender Festival was born.
Inspired by Provence, Created for Olalla
From that moment, the vision began to take shape, not simply as a festival, but as an invitation to discover Olalla differently.
Inspired by the warmth, authenticity, and slower pace of Provence, the goal was to create a boutique festival where visitors could wander from one Gathering Place to another, meet local makers and farmers, enjoy live music, learn, create, and truly connect with this remarkable community.
Rather than gathering everyone in a single location, the festival would invite visitors to explore Olalla itself, discovering its lavender farms, local businesses, Gathering Places, and the people who make this community so special.
Bringing the Vision to Life
The months that followed were devoted to bringing that vision to life: developing the festival's identity, inviting local businesses to participate, creating partnerships, designing meaningful experiences, coordinating volunteers, and weaving together the countless details that transform an idea into a memorable tradition.
In time, the festival came full circle by establishing friendships with our sister lavender festivals in Provence, creating a bridge between the place that inspired the vision and the community that brought it to life.
The Story Continues
Today, the Olalla Lavender Festival continues to grow thanks to the passion, generosity, and dedication of everyone who contributes to it. Every volunteer, sponsor, participating business, musician, artisan, farmer, and visitor has become part of its story.
Together, they create an experience that celebrates not only lavender, but also community, creativity, connection, and the simple joy of slowing down.
What began as a request to create a new event for a single winery has blossomed into a boutique festival that invites visitors to discover Olalla's farms, local businesses, Gathering Places, and the people who make this community so special.
And perhaps that is the most beautiful part of its story.
A Celebration Inspired by Provence, Rooted in the Heart of Olalla.
From Provence to Olalla
The Olalla Lavender Festival was born from a love of lavender, community, and the simple joys of gathering together.
Growing up in Provence, founder Huguette Marsicano was surrounded by the sights, scents, and traditions of Provence. Lavender was part of everyday life, woven into gardens, markets, family recipes, artisan crafts, and summer celebrations.
Those influences have remained a constant source of inspiration throughout her life and continue to be reflected in projects she has created over the years, including French Moods, a celebration of French culture, food, and the art of gathering.
Years later, after making Olalla home, she discovered a community that shared many of the same values: a connection to the land, appreciation for local makers, and a desire to create meaningful experiences that bring people together.
The Olalla Lavender Festival emerged as a natural bridge between these two worlds.
Inspired by Provence
Provence is known around the world for its lavender fields, but its true magic lies in something deeper: a way of life rooted in beauty, simplicity, and connection.
From village festivals and open-air markets to family gatherings around a shared table, everyday life in Provence celebrates the joy of slowing down and appreciating the moment. Lavender is woven into this cultural fabric, not only as a crop, but as a symbol of tradition, craftsmanship, hospitality, and creativity.
These values continue to inspire the Olalla Lavender Festival today. More than a celebration of lavender blooms, the festival embraces the spirit of gathering, learning, creating, and sharing experiences with others.
Whether through artisan demonstrations, culinary experiences, live music, local farms, or meaningful conversations, we hope to capture a little of that Provençal spirit and bring it to life in Olalla.
